What is Kenner Mayor's Court?
Kenner Mayor's Court is the city's court for ordinance and traffic matters. It sits at 415 Williams Blvd. in Rivertown, in the building known as the Rivertown Exhibition Hall or the Mayor's Court Building. Cases there are prosecuted by the Kenner City Attorney.
Most tickets that Kenner Police write for city violations are set there. The City of Kenner posts ticket payment information on its website, but before you pay anything, make sure you understand what a conviction will mean for your driving record. Call (504) 905-8399 with questions.
Ticket from a state trooper or a deputy instead?
Not every ticket written in Kenner goes to Mayor's Court. A ticket charged under state law, or written by a state trooper or Jefferson Parish deputy, may be set in First Parish Court of Jefferson Parish at 924 David Drive in Metairie, which handles East Bank traffic and misdemeanors. Your ticket names the court. If you got more than one ticket at the same stop, they could even be in different courts, so read each one carefully.
Driving under suspension in Kenner
Driving on a suspended license is one of the most serious tickets you can get. A first conviction carries up to $500 and/or up to 6 months in jail for a regular license, and up to $5,000 for a commercial license. It also automatically extends your existing suspension by 1 year.
If your suspension came from a DWI, a later conviction requires at least 7 days in jail, served consecutively. Often the real fix is clearing the reason for the suspension, such as an old ticket you never resolved. After a missed court date, the court notifies the state, and you can receive notice that your license may be suspended. Clearing that costs a $100 OMV fee once the ticket is resolved, and a bench warrant is also possible. See our arrest warrants page. Barry can help you sort out both problems.
No insurance tickets and getting your license back
Knowingly driving without liability insurance carries a $500 to $1,000 fine. Your registration and driving privileges can be revoked or suspended, your plates canceled and your vehicle impounded.
Getting reinstated costs money too. Under current OMV policy, reinstatement fees after an insurance lapse are $125 if you were uninsured up to 30 days, $275 for 31 to 90 days and $525 for 91 days or more, each including a $25 administrative fee. Get insurance in place right away and keep proof of it. If you had coverage on the date of the ticket but could not show it, bring that proof to your consultation, since it may change how the ticket is handled.
Should you just pay a Kenner ticket?
Think before you pay. Louisiana does not use a point system, but traffic convictions are reported to the Office of Motor Vehicles and show on your record, where insurers see them. Commercial drivers face added risk: 2 serious violations within 3 years means a 60-day CDL disqualification.
Most simple traffic violations carry modest fines, up to $175 and/or 30 days for a first violation when no specific penalty applies. The bigger cost is often the record. Read should I pay my traffic ticket in Louisiana? and our traffic ticket defense page.
Tickets from a stop that ended in a DWI arrest
If Kenner Police arrested you for DWI, you may also have separate tickets from the same stop, such as speeding or an improper lane change. The DWI is generally a state charge heard in First Parish Court, while city traffic citations may be set in Kenner Mayor's Court. That can mean two courts, two dates and two sets of paperwork for one night.
The tickets and the DWI affect each other, so they should be handled together. See our Kenner DWI lawyer page and remember the 30-day deadline to request an OMV hearing after a DWI arrest.
