Which court will hear a Kenner criminal case?
It depends on the charge. A Kenner case can land in one of three local courts, and your paperwork should name the one you are in:
- Kenner Mayor's Court, 415 Williams Blvd. (the Mayor's Court Building at Rivertown). It hears city ordinance and traffic matters, and the Kenner City Attorney prosecutes them. See our Kenner traffic ticket lawyer page.
- First Parish Court of Jefferson Parish, 924 David Dr., Metairie. It handles East Bank state misdemeanors, including most first and second offense DWIs, plus traffic cases.
- 24th Judicial District Court, 200 Derbigny St., Gretna. Every felony from Jefferson Parish is prosecuted here by the Jefferson Parish District Attorney. It is about 25 to 30 minutes (roughly 16 miles) from our office.
Federal charges are different. Kenner is in the Eastern District of Louisiana, so a federal case goes to the federal courthouse at 500 Poydras St. in New Orleans. Learn more about our federal criminal defense work.
What happens after an arrest in Kenner?
Most arrests inside the city are made by the Kenner Police Department. If you or a family member is being held on Jefferson Parish charges, the parish jail is the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center at 100 Dolhonde St. in Gretna.
Louisiana law says an arrested person must be brought before a judge within 72 hours, not counting weekends and legal holidays. At that appearance, bail can be set or reviewed. Judges weigh things like the charge, criminal history and flight risk.
